Despite our increasing food-awareness, many of us think of pasta as fattening, low on fibre, high on empty calories and a source of excess carbs.

Not so!  Pasta generally delivers a reasonable hundred calories per ounce, two grams or more of fibre per serving and iron and B vitamins. And carbs are a necessary fuel source for us!
