Mango is a tropical fruit that comes in as many as 1,000 varieties. Native to southern and southeast Asia, the fruit is now is also grown in Central and South America, Africa and the Arabian peninsula.
Mangoes are seasonal fruits, with the fresh mango fruit season beginning in May. Mangoes are usually harvested while they are green but perfectly mature. Unripe mangoes are extremely sour.
Known worldwide as the king of fruit, mangoes are an incredibly healthy snack, and are considered one of the most nutrient-dense fruits. Mangoes are high in fibre, Vitamin C, Vitamin B6, Potassium, Copper and Vitamin A and other important phytochemicals. Mangoes also contain beta-carotene which may help slow the aging process, reduce the risk of certain forms of cancer, improve lung function, and reduce complications associated with diabetes.
