Lions are best known for fighting blindness. It is part of their history and still continues with their work today. By conducting vision screenings, equipping hospitals and clinics, distributing medicine, and raising awareness of eye disease, Lions work toward their mission of providing vision for all. Lions Clubs also perform volunteer work for many different kinds of community projects – including caring for the environment, feeding the hungry and aiding seniors and the disabled.
The Bermuda Hamilton Lions Club was formed in 1946 as a charity and is widely known throughout Bermuda for their Gas-A-Rama fundraising where Lions Club members pump gas for the day. With a combination of part proceeds from the event and the sale of raffle tickets, several charities chosen by the club every year receive approx. $11,000.00 each.
This year the Bermuda Association of Girl Guides, C.A.R.E & S.C.A.R.S. were chosen as beneficiaries. In the last 12 months Hamilton Lions Club have donated $23,200.00 to local charities, plus $1000.00 to assist with the damage after Hurricane Sandy in the NY area. $1500.00 to a student with low vision at Warwick Academy to assist in buying equipment to assist him to read & use a computer.
To further help with funding, the Hamilton Lions Club has produced a 2014 calendar that not only features beautiful photographs of Bermuda’s spectacular scenery, but also includes a recipe each month.
