Rice was first planted in South Carolina in the late 1600s and soon there were over 100 major rice plantations in the region. Thomas Jefferson travelled to the Carolinas to see what the fuss was about and before long became Carolina rice’s biggest fan.
Present-day exponents of Carolina rice say that the secret to their success is its heightened aromatic quality and flavour due to the ideal conditions of the land.
