You Can Make a Difference to our Environment

By following just one of these eco-friendly tips, grocery shopping can be an easy way to make your lifestyle greener and the planet healthier too!

Buy more fresh food & less pre-packaged food

Think of all the resources that go into processing, packaging, and shipping food. Choose buying fresh food whenever you can. It’s healthier for you – especially if you buy organic produce, and doesn’t take as much of a toll on the environment.

Most fresh food, especially fresh fruit & veggies, can be bought without extra wrapping, too!

Buy in Bulk

Buying in bulk or “family sizes” is a great way to reduce packaging and the need for multiple trips to the grocery.

Dividing these bulk sizes into smaller reusable containers at home can also help control portion sizes and manage your weight.

Paper or Plastic? Neither. BYOB.

Bring your own shopping bags with you to the store. Don’t have your own? You can buy eco-friendly shopping bags from either of our stores.

Shop local and consider carpooling.

The more your food had to travel to get to your table, the more impact it had on the environment along the way. Buying your produce from local growers means fewer chemicals, processing, and less shipping. It saves fossil fuel, the food is fresher, tastes better, and has more nutrients. Better yet, you support local farmers & the Bermuda economy.

Reduce your grocery shopping footprint by carpooling with a couple of friends and grocery shopping together.

When possible, buy items in recyclable containers

Try to buy your products in containers you know can be recycled locally like glass, tin and aluminum.

Glass containers can be recycled over and over and Bermuda’s Recycling Centre crushes the glass to use locally for building material.

Avoid or Buy Fewer Individually Packaged Items

Look for products that aren’t individually wrapped. For example, buy a large container of juice and pour it into a thermos for the kids’ lunches instead of buying the single-serving sized juice boxes.
